The aims of the conference are to exchange experiences and discuss mutual challenges of major importance for Nordic water management for the implementation of WFD.

Some features enhancing Nordic collaboration on water issues in a European context:

  • Large rural areas with lots of water bodies and few monitoring data
  • Sub-arctic climate and partly same species composition, water types and pressures
  • Comparable management systems and traditions
  • Largest lake and coastal areas
  • Hydropower an important source for electricity supply
  • Common pressures and impacts regarding water management issues

The Nordic countries - Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway – have joined forces to harmonize the implementation of the Water Framework Directive in the Nordic countries. This Nordic exchange of experiences started in 2006 . Summaries of previous events can be seen here.
