Newsitem

The Environment Agency of Iceland was dissolved on December 31, 2024.

On January 1, 2025, the Icelandic Environment and Energy Agency and the Nature Conservation Agency of Iceland commenced operations.

Some disruptions to services can be expected during the first days of the new year.

Websites for the new agencies are under development at uos.is and nattura.is.

In the meantime, the websites of the Environment Agency of Iceland and the National Energy Authority will remain accessible. We also recommend visiting the websites for Snæfellsjökull National Park and Vatnajökull National Park.

Responsibilities of the Icelandic Environment and Energy Agency

The Environment and Energy Agency takes over the operations of the National Energy Authority and parts of the Environment Agency. The agency will oversee the administration of climate, environmental, and energy affairs, as well as resource management issues. This includes responsibilities in diverse areas such as:

  • Air quality
  • Chemicals
  • Circular economy
  • Climate and Energy Fund
  • Electricity subsidies
  • Emissions and climate
  • Energy efficiency
  • Energy transitions
  • Inspections
  • Ocean and water
  • Permits

Responsibilities of the Nature Conservation Agency of Iceland

The Nature Conservation Agency of Iceland will assume responsibilities related to nature conservation previously handled by the Environment Agency of Iceland and the operations of Vatnajökull National Park. The agency will manage administration, inspections, and other projects in the fields of nature conservation and sustainable development. Its focus will include protected areas, conservation of wild birds and mammals, and hunting regulation.

Additionally, the agency will coordinate regional planning, management, conservation efforts, and oversight in the aforementioned areas.
