Outdoor activities and hiking trails

The hike up Laugarfjall is a pleasant and accessible round trip. Up there are two observation platforms with views over the hot springs area and forestry on the one hand, and the other with views over Helludalur and Bjarnarfell.

The protected area extends up to the forestry parking lot in Haukadalur and inside the forestry area there is an abundance of hiking trails. It is a fun place to wander around and get lost.

The most popular hiking trail is the one to Svartagil. It takes you past Hakonarlundur and over Kaldilaekur to the north. Through Svartagil runs a small stream where the tallest tree in Haukadalsskógur can be found (source: FÍ Yearbook 1998).

By walking further along under the slopes of Sandfell to the northwest you can walk down into Gunnarslundur. It is an ideal place to enjoy a picnic and listen to the trickling stream and birds chirping. The ring then comes to a close again at the parking lot at Hakonarlundur.

Outside the Geysir area there are many great hikes worth exploring.

There is a riding/hiking trail north of Laugarfjall and it leads to the forestry in Haukadalur. This way it is possible to walk around Laugarfjall and connect with the forestry and follow a road back.
