Kasthusatjorn, Alftanes
A part of Kasthústjörn and its surroundings in Álftanes were declared a protected area in 2002, and the aim of the protection is to preserve the pond and its diverse birdlife and ecosystem. The pond is a beach pond, shallow and full of life. The pond is richly biodiverse and is ideal for research and education.
The nature reserve covers an area of 4.20 ha.
The adjacent beach to Kasthúsatjörn was protected as a country park in 2002.
The aim of the protection of the beach as a country park is to ensure an area for outdoor activities and general public use. The beach and adjacent marine areas are particularly interesting for nature viewing and activities such as bird watching and beach combing. Access to the area is good, and therefore, it is ideal for education and outdoor teaching.
The country park covers an area of 17.6 ha.
