The surrender of allowances for installations and aircraft operators in the EU Emission Trading Scheme (EU ETS) ended on 30. April.

In total, six aircraft operators and seven installations surrendered their allowances. Total emissions in aviation that fall under the scope were 718.624 tonnes of CO2, but for installations the total emissions were 1.780.965 tonnes of CO2

There is substantial increase in emissions from flight activites that falls under the scope of the EU ETS legislation, or 31,3% between 2015 and 2016. In 2015, surrendered emissions were 547.690 tonnes of CO2 but 718.624 tonnes of CO2 for the year 2016. It should be noted though, that the number of aircraft operators that were in compliance increased also, or from four to six. Emissions from flight activities is also restricted to flights within the EEA, see regulation 421/2014

For installations, there was a small decrease or 1,7%. Emissions were 1.812.043 tonnes of CO2 in 2015 and went down to 1.780.965 tonnes of CO2 in the year 2016. One new installation was added to the system in 2016.

The Comission has published a compliance list, which is available here: http://ec.europa.eu/environment/ets/napYearInformation.do?languageCode=en&napId=19856&periodYear=2016&action=periodYear&installationId=&registryCode=IS&periodCode=2
