Access and services
Vestfjarðavegur No. 60 runs through the nature reserve, down to the heart of the valley and up Pennudalur over Dynjandisheiði. There’s an intersection by Hotel Flókalundur where Vestfjarðarvegur 60 meets Barðastrandarvegur 62. The Breiðafjörður ferry Baldur docks in Brjánslækur, around 2.5 km from the western borders of the nature reserve. The closest airport is in Bíldudalur.
In Flókalundur there is a summer hotel, fuel service station and a camping site with toilet facilities. There is also a holiday cabin village and a concrete swimming pool which is open in summer. Hellulaug is 300 m east of Flókalundur; it has a parking lot. There are also parking lots in Vatnsdalsbotn, in Hörgsnes and mid-way between Eiðisá and Vatnsdalsá. By Penna and the roots of Þingmannaheiði, there’s also space for a few cars and both spots have picnic tables. Fishing permits for Vatnsdalsá and Vatnsdalsvatn are sold in Flókalundur and Brjánslækur. There is no garbage reception in the nature reserve.
Land rangers operate in the nature reserve in summer. Their role is to ensure that the provisions of the Nature Conservation Act, special legislation, protection plans and other government directives are respected, provide information and education to tourists about the nature and history of the areas, as well as handle daily operations and maintenance.
