Newsitem

The Environment Agency will charge a service fee at Landmannalaugar during the summer of 2025. Fee collection will begin as soon as the roads to the area open, no later than June 20, and will continue into the fall. Access to restroom facilities at the site will be included in the fee. Reservations for parking will still be required during peak hours.

Reservation system

Visitors traveling to Landmannalaugar on their own between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM must reserve parking in advance. This arrangement will be in effect daily from June 20 to September 14 (both days included).

Those who reserve parking in advance will pay the service fee when the reservation is made.

Visitors arriving outside the reservation-required hours will pay the service fee afterward, using an app or payment system, with detailed information available on-site; otherwise, an electronic invoice will be sent.

Further details about the reservation system will be announced in the new year.

Important: Reserve Parking in Advance

During the summer of 2024, parking spaces were full and sold out during the day, nearly every day of the peak travel season. It is therefore essential to secure a parking spot in advance if you plan to visit Landmannalaugar during the day. Visitors arriving at the site between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM without a reservation cannot be guaranteed parking. After 4:00 PM, reservations will no longer be required.

Agreement with Icelandic Tourist Association

The Environment Agency and Icelandic Tourist Association (FÍ) have agreed on a unified fee collection for Landmannalaugar in 2025. This agreement ensures that all visitors to the area will have access to FÍ restroom facilities, regardless of whether they arrive on their own or with a tour operator. The separate facility/restroom fee previously charged in Landmannalaugar will no longer apply – it is now included in the service fee, which is charged per vehicle.

Improved Service and a Simpler System

The goal of the revised system is to enhance the visitor experience at Landmannalaugar and reduce strain on the area. By combining the Environment Agency’s service fee and FÍ’s facilities fee, the system will be more convenient for visitors, who will now only need to pay one fee for access to parking and restrooms. The service fee will be collected per vehicle upon entry into the area, 24/7 and is charged only once, regardless of the length of stay.

Overnight stays in tents or huts with FÍ will still require separate payment.

To reduce traffic delays, a camera system will be introduced to monitor traffic arriving to Landmannalaugar. This new system will partially automate supervision and eliminate the need for on-site reservations, which caused significant queues and delays last summer. Staff will still be present at the check-point during peak hours to manage access for those with reservations.

Positive Experience with Traffic Control in 2024

The experience with the reservation system during the summer of 2024 was generally positive. Traffic flow at Landmannalaugar improved, although bottlenecks still occurred at peak times, particularly at the check-point. Long lines of cars often formed there due to visitors making on-site reservations before gaining access to parking.

In light of this experience and feedback from tour operators, reservations will be required for private vehicles between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM for the 2025 season, adjusted from the previous hours of 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

Some traffic bottlenecks still occurred at peak times in Landmannalaugar in summer 2024.

Tour Operators Exempt from Reservations

As in 2024, tour operators will be exempt from the reservation requirement in Landmannalaugar for summer 2025. However, tour operators will pay the same service fee as other visitors for their vehicles. This ensures fairness in fee collection while guaranteeing restroom access for all guests arriving with tour operators, without additional charges.

Updated Rates for 2025

New rates for parking at Landmannalaugar will be published at the beginning of 2025. The fees will reflect the unified fee collection and reservation system. The goal is to ensure fair fees and good service for all visitors.

Additional information will be available in early 2025.
